Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers... 17 text volumes, 4 supplement volumes, 11 (in 12) plate volumes in total of 33 volumes. With 1 engraved frontispiece (together with the rare explanatory leaf by Diderot), 1 folded and engraved tree of knowledge, 2786 (recto: 3129), of which 253 double-page and 19 folded several times) copper plates and 7 folded tables.
Paris, Briasson et al., 1751-1772 (text vols. 1-7 and plate vols. 1-10); Neufchâstel (i.e. Paris), Faulche, 1765 (text vols. 8-17); Amsterdam, Panckoucke and Rey, 1776-1777 (supplements and supplement plate volume). Folio. Contemporary marbled calf with gilt outer edges as well as richly gilt spine and 2 spine labels (some rubbing and bumbing to heads of spines, small tears or cracks to heads and hinges in places, covers somewhat rubbed and occasionally slightly scratched, few restorations). 5 vols. bound differently.
Adams, Diderot I, G1 - Tchemerzine IV, 434-435 - PMM 200 – Brunet II, 700 – Graesse II, 389 – Ebert 6709. - Original edition with all plate and supplement volumes, without the index volumes, complete with all plates! - Vol. 4 with wormholes and minor loss of text at the beginning, vol. 8 with water stain to upper margin, vol. 14 first leaves with traces of rodent and minor loss of (white) paper. Supplement volume of plates uncut. - All in all very good and complete copy in contemporary bindings. - Provenance: Swiss private property.
