PAIR OF PLATES FROM THE ROYAL SERVICE WITH "YELLOW LION”

Meissen, ca. 1735.
Painted in the Kakiemon style with a tiger wrapping himself around a bamboo cane, brown line on the edge. Underglaze blue sword mark, potter's mark E (Johann Gottfried Eckoldts).
Ø 23.5 cm.

Enamel colors and brown line on the edge somewhat rubbed.

Provenance:
- Collection Dr. Max Fahrländer, Basel-Riehen.
- By succession in the present private collection, Winterthur.

The very first porcelain items with this decoration were made for the Meissen Manufactory Director Hoym and the French dealer Lemaire for resale as Japanese originals in France. After the fraud was discovered, these copies were subsequently signed with enamel blue swords at the Manufactory in 1731 and found their way into the Royal Collections in Dresden.

In November 1733, shortly before his Coronation as King of Poland, August III issued an order that all porcelain items in the style of East Asian models were to be delivered only to him in the future, since the plans for the Japanese Palace, which was to be newly furnished, required large quantities of Kakiemon porcelain. The delivery specifications of the following years confirm not only deliveries to the Court, but also list various extraordinary diplomatic gifts from the King. Subsequent deliveries continued until the second half of the 18th century, as confirmed by the delivery list to the various Royal Court Kitchens. (J.
