FRAGMENT OF A TAPESTRY BORDER
Renaissance, Brussels, probably from the workshop of François Geubels, ca. 1560.
Allegorical representations of Generosity and Justice under a canopy, the top featuring three eagles. In an architectural frame.
167 × 66 cm.
Colors faded. Restorations.
The tapestry fragment on offer was part of the border of a large tapestry; very similar borders are found, for example, in the tapestries from a series about Romulus and Remus by François Geubels, which are on exhibit, inter alia, in the Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna (Guy Delmarcel. La tapisserie flamande. Paris 1999, pp. 155ff.). In said tapestry, the group of figures is somewhat modified, and provided with a cartouche inscribed: "REGNVM AVTEN JVSTICIA ET LIBERALITATE".
