JOHANN GEORGE VON HAMILTON (CIRCLE OF)

(Munich 1672–1737 Vienna)
Portrait of a nobleman on horseback.
Oil on canvas.
With monogram lower right on the collar of the dog: P.D.H.
74.5 × 57 cm.

Dr. Ludmila Ourodová-Hronková, whom we would like to thank for her help in cataloguing this painting, suggests an attribution to Josef František Adolph (1671-1749). Adolph was an excellent animal painter and specialized mainly in depictions of horses. Among other things, he worked as the court painter of Count Antonín Serényi in the Milotice chateau. Adolph copied and imitated works by Johann George de Hamilton, but used different formats and painting techniques (see Ludmila Ourodová-Hronková: Johann George de Hamilton (1672-1737), malíř zvířat a lidí, 2015).
