"As a teenager, McGinley had med Larry Clark and taken up photography while studying graphic design in New York. The implication of this publicized biography is that, early on, he knew that there was a possibility that his images of his and his friends' lives could one day receive public attention... What is new in his work is a lack of angst and pathos apparant in so much earlier intimate photography, now substituted by a knowing playfulness in collaboration with his subjects to help shape the narratives for the public contesxt of the art world." (Charlotte Cotton. The Photograph as Contemporary Art. London, 2009, p. 153).
