(Zhytomyr 1879–1956 Geneva)

Signed and dated lower right: E.Epstein / 1918.
48 x 61.5.
Provenance:
- Inter Art, Basel.

Elisabeth Epstein had her artistic beginnings in Moscow. Later, she moved to Munich, where she became acquainted with other Russian artists such as Kandinsky, Jawlensky and Werefkin, and soon became a member of that circle. Afterwards, she travelled to Paris, where she shared an apartment with Sonia Delaunay Terk, with whom she became good friends throughout her life. In 1906, she was given the honour of participating in the Russian art section of the Salon d'Automne in the Grand Palais, where she was able to present her work alongside the great artists of the Russian avant-garde. Through her numerous journeys between Paris and Munich she developed important friendships and thus became one of the central intermediary figures of the art scene between Munich and Paris, particularly between Der Blaue Reiter editors and the contemporary Parisian art scene (Epstein provided the contact between Franz Marc and Robert Delaunay). In the Blaue Reiter exhibition, she was represented by two paintings.
Epstein's style bears evidence of several influences. She was most influenced by Jawlensky, who contemporaneously painted very similar works between 1900 and 1910. Later, Epstein found her way to abstraction, and more and more orphic elements appear in her works, which are strongly reminiscent of the painting by her artist couple friends, the Delaunays.
