Provenance: Swiss Space Museum
On 14 October 1968, the crew of Apollo 7 became the first to broadcast live on television from a manned American spacecraft. The astronauts were expected to use the television camera to show their colleagues in Mission Control, as well as the public watching on TV, how they lived their daily lives in the weightlessness of space. But as flight plan changes crowded their schedule, spacecraft commander Walter Schirra cancelled the first of several planned television demonstrations. Deke Slayton tried to change Wally’s mind but was told sharply that there would be no TV show that day!
When the broadcasts finally began, the crew appeared to enjoy them, using cue cards with texts such as ‘Keep Those Cards and Letters Coming In, Folks’ and ‘Hello from the Lovely Apollo Room high atop everything’.
Presented here is a piece of the TV cable flown to space aboard Apollo 7 from 11–22 October 1968. It connected the camera to the broadcast system aboard the Apollo 7 spacecraft. The piece of cable comes with a copy of the removal tag of the full cable – a wonderful piece of space and TV history.
