The Italian-American artist Francesco Clemente was born in Naples on 23 March 1952. Clemente is one of the main exponents of the postmodern Transavantgarde and Arte Cifra, the Italian manifestation of Neo-Expressionism. He soon abandoned his architectural studies, which he had started in 1970, and devoted himself to painting, his true passion, in which he was self-taught. His first solo exhibition at the Galleria Valle Giulia in Rome took place in 1971. Two years later, he undertook his first trip to India. This country, with its diverse cultures, religions, philosophies and contrasting landscapes, which Clemente often used as a source of inspiration for his works, fascinated the young artist in a lasting way. He returned to India time and again and set up a studio in Chennai (formerly Madras). He also travelled to Afghanistan with his mentor Alighiero Boetti in 1973.
In the mid-1970s, he met his future wife Alba Primiceri, who was a frequent subject of his iconic portraits. The human body, especially the female body, self-portraits, dreamlike-visionary subjects, sexuality and myth are also among the artist's favourite themes. In 1981, he moved to New York, where he met Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, who not only enriched his creative outlook but also had a lasting influence on his oeuvre. Clemente's participation in the Venice Biennale in 1980 brought him international fame. His works have been shown in numerous international group and solo exhibitions, including at the Sezon Museum of Art in Tokyo, the Royal Academy in London and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
