BAJ, ENRICO
* 31.10.1924 Milan, † 16.6.2003 Verigate
Enrico Baj was born in Milan on 31 October 1924. He played a key role in shaping the Italian avant-garde of the 1950s. Influenced by Surrealism and Dadaism, he invented a bizarre world of figures in his works that called into question social conventions and denounced political and social injustices. Fascism and then later nuclear power are always important themes. He frequently worked with found objects in his paintings, drawings and collages.
Baj studied law until he left Milan in 1944 to avoid being drafted by the Fascist army. After the war, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Brera. In 1951, he founded the artist group ‘Movimento Nucleare’. Together with Asger Jorn, he founded ‘Le Mouvement international pour une Bauhaus Imaginiste’ in 1953. In 1964, he took part in the Venice Biennale, which was followed by numerous international exhibitions. Enrico Baj died in Verigate in 2003.
