ARP, HANS (JEAN)
* 16.9.1886 Strasbourg, † 7.6.1966 Basel
Hans Peter Wilhelm Arp was born in Strasbourg on 16 September 1886 to German-Alsatian parents. From 1901 to 1908, he attended art schools in Strasbourg and Weimar as well as the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1910, he founded the Swiss artists' association ‘Der Moderne Bund’ in Weggis, his new place of residence. After spending time in various European cities, he moved to Zurich in 1916 and co-founded the Dada movement. There he met the painter Sophie Taeuber, whom he married in 1922.
After moving to Paris, Arp turned increasingly to Surrealism. In 1925, he took part in the first group exhibition of the Surrealists. A year later, he became a French citizen and moved to Meudon. From 1930, Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp joined various artists' groups, including the new Parisian artists' group ‘Abstraction-Création’. In 1940, Arp's works were denigrated by the National Socialists as degenerate art and banned. In 1942, Arp fled from the German troops to Grasse. He later moved to Zurich, where Sophie Taeuber-Arp died as the result of an accident.
After the end of the war, Arp returned to France. In 1959, he moved to Locarno and married the art collector Marguerite Hagenbach. Hans Arp, Franco-German painter, sculptor, poet and co-founder of Dada, died in Basel in 1966. As a pioneer of abstract art, Hans Arp was one of the most important avant-garde artists of the 20th century.
