MAESTRO DELLA MISERICORDIA
active in Florence between 1370–1400
It is possible that Taddeo Gaddi's elder son Giovanni Gaddi is the artist behind the anonymous Maestro della Misericordia. Together with Giottino (1324–1369) and Giovanni da Milano (before 1330–circa 1370), he is recorded as having worked in Rome in 1369, where he is said to have played a leading role within a larger group of painters on the decoration of the renovated papal palace for Pope Urban V. His works were influenced by Giotto's (1267–1337) most successful Florentine heirs, Taddeo Gaddi (1290–1366) and Bernardo Daddi (1295–1348).
