BELLY AMPHORA “HERACLES' JOURNEY TO OLYMPUS”

Greek, ca. 540/530 BC Type B, attributable to the Bucci painter.
Black-figured ceramics. Side A: Athena as a charioteer with a quadriga (1 white and 3 black horses), Hercules as a warrior with a club, led by Hermes the messenger of the gods. The top with an elegant palmette and pearl frieze. Side B: Warrior in full regalia with shield and lance, flanked on the left by a youth and an old man, flanked on the right by a female figure and two other men. The top with decorative frieze. At the bottom of the base, probably a later, notched monogram.
H 45 cm.

Restorations, retouches and probably minor supplements. Loss of color to the painting and some rubbing.

Provenance:
- Bruce and Ingrid McAlpine, London, October 24, 1979, No. 348 (with copy of a letter).
- Zurich private collection, acquired from the above gallery in 1979 (inventory, no. 5.1).

Dr. Donna Kurtz of the Ashmoleum Museum Oxford has attributed the amphora to the circle of Exekias (24 October 1979).
