Italy or Spain, 17th/18th century. After models by GIAMBOLOGNA (Jean de Boulogne, Douai 1528-1609 Florence) or A. SUSINI (Antonio Susini, active between 1572-1624).
Bronze, with remains of gold lacquer. Mounted on a later rectangular, in part blackened, wooden plinth.
H without plinth 30 cm.

Provenance, according to historical sources:
- Formerly part of a collection in the West Country (UK).
- Bonhams Auction, July 2017, Lot No. 48.
- Private collection, Switzerland.

The motif of a rearing stallion is one of the most popular subjects of the 16th and 17th centuries. Probably influenced by Leonardo da Vinci's monumental horse sculptures, numerous sculptors and bronzers - F. Fanella, P. Tacca or B. Prieur - took up this theme. The bronze on offer shows great similarities with the most famous version by Giambologna, cast by A. Susini ca. 1600, the so-called "cavallino, che sta in su due piedi". The great success of such models was soon adopted and further developed, especially in Augsburg.
