PIETÀ FROM THE ESTATE OF NIKLAUS STOECKLIN
Italy, early 15th century. In the style of the Rimini maître.
Alabaster worked full-round and verso slightly flattened and hollowed in the base. Group of figures with the Virgin Mary holding the martyred body of Christ on her lap. An angel's head supports the feet of Christ.
38 × 15 × 58 cm.
Provenance:
- Fritz Stoecklin and Co. antiques, Basel before 1929 (copy of invoice available, purchased there as Rhenish/Alsatian ca. 1500).
- Niklaus Stoecklin, Basel, July 9, 1929, acquired from the above gallery (according to proof of purchase).
- In present-day private collection in Basel, through succession.
The Pietà on offer comes from the estate of the Basel artist Niklaus Stoecklin (1896-1982) and remained in the same Basel family for two generations. Based on a copy of an invoice, we know that Stoecklin bought this group of figures in 1929. This alabaster figure group served the painter as a model for a religious painting from 1932, which is now kept in the Museum zu Allerheiligen in Schaffhausen (deposit of the Sturzenegger Foundation, inv. no. A2106).
