Christian Herdeg is considered one of the pioneers of light art in Switzerland and has played a key role in its development since the 1970s. As a trained photographer, lighting technician and cameraman, light has always played an important role in his work. From early on he began to explore light intensively as an artistic medium and created works that address the interplay of space, colour and light in a highly distinctive way. Whether playful or sober, his works combine functionality with aesthetics and their spatial presence is captivating. Using coloured light fields, basic geometric shapes and a broad spectrum of visual effects, Herdeg creates sculptures, installations and reliefs in which light becomes a tangible sculpture. Herdeg primarily uses neon and argon tubes for his objects; his formal language is clear, reduced and minimalist. High precision meets well-founded technical expertise, which then takes an in-depth look at the various properties of light. As a result of many years of collaboration with Leuchtstoffwerke Heidelberg, the colour palette of his light installations now comprises around 300 shades. The ‘light artist's colour pencils’, as Herdeg calls them. This unique and extensive colour poetry has had a lasting influence on the perception of light art not only in Switzerland but also internationally, making Herdeg a key figure in this discipline.
