ENAMELED LID
Limoges, 16th century. In the style of Pierre Reymond.
Enamel, painted “en grisaille” and small gold and red drawing on a round, domed copper lid. Depiction of two scenes from the life of St. Luke the Evangelist. The rounded lid decorated with acanthus leaves and ST LUC, the lip of the lid with a decorative frieze. Black counter enamel with old inventory label N°6. Tazza and lid finial missing.
H 5.5 cm, Ø 17 cm.
Fragment with very beautiful enamel painting, reminiscent of works by Pierre Reymond, of which dated objects from the years 1537 to 1578 are known. These include numerous pieces of tableware painted “en grisaille” with mythological, biblical and allegorical depictions. From the 1540s onwards, the grisaille paintings were given a light, pastel coloration, like on the lid on offer. Cf. Sophie Baratte: Les émaux peints de Limoges. Musée du Louvre, Paris 2000, p. 188 ff.
