Christoph von Graffenried (1603-1687) completed his studies in Lausanne, Geneva, Dijon and Paris, after which he joined the lifeguards of Prince Frederick Henry of Orange. After his return to his native country, he became a member of the Great Council in Berne in 1635 and of the Small Council in 1651. In 1654, he was a builder and from 1657-1685, Venner (Officer Cadet) zu Pfistern. Numerous panels for Christoph von Graffenried are known, including those from the Church of Habkern (1666), Ringgenberg (1671), Kirchenthurnen (1673), Gsteig (1673), Beatenberg (1673), Langnau (1674), Leissigen (ca. 1675) and Steffisburg (1681).

The armorial panel on offer is probably the one that was auctioned in 1978 at the Stuker Auction House (Stuker, 1978, Lot No. 3022).
