Malachite, also known as mountain green or copper green, belongs to the mineral class of carbonates and nitrates. This opaque, green-banded mineral crystallises in the monoclinic crystal system, and most often forms botryoidal, fibrous, or stalagmitic masses, in fractures and deep, underground spaces, where the water table and hydrothermal fluids provide the means for chemical precipitation.
The earliest mention of the mineral goes back to the Roman scholar Pliny the Elder, who lived from 24 to 79 AD. In ancient times the mineral already was extremely popular. It was used for many kinds of art objects or finely pulverised as eye shadow. It is considered to be one of the oldest-known green pigments used in paintings.
In esoteric circles it is regarded as one of the most important healing stones and is said to have healing properties for headaches, specific female disorders, eye inflammation, and also to increase perception and concentration.
