CROSS WITH POCKET WATCH MOVEMENT
South German, mid-17th century. The movement from Paris, signed Ester à Paris (probably Henry Ester, mentioned ca. 1630).
Ebony and wood with ebony veneer, inlaid in engraved silver, the panels with depictions from the Marian cycle (Visitation, Annunciation, Nativity), framed by winged angel heads, flowers and fleurons. Rectangular pedestal on a flared frame and curved bracket feet. The base fitted with a pocket watch movement with verge escapement, winding via fusee and chain. Pierced, finely worked silver verge escapement bridge. Gilt dial with 23 white enamel cartouches, featuring Roman hours and Arabic minutes (one minute cartouche missing). Cross, probably later, the beam ends decorated with silver rocaille set with semi-precious stone cabochons. Cast and engraved Corpus Christi in silver.
H 53.5 cm.
Restored and with supplements. Christ's arm broken. Various losses. Remains of gilding in some areas.
