A SEATED FIGURE OF A MONK.
Japan, late 18th/19th c. Height 34 cm.
Solid wood with polychrome paint and gofun. Seated young monk with a distinctive long face, showing a calm and distant expression. The attribute in his left hand, such as a sutra scroll or a rosary, are missing; his right hand presumably held a shakujô staff. Traces of age.
Provenance: Old Swiss private collection from Southern Switzerland.
