A LONG TORAJA RONGKONG RITUAL BANNER.
Indonesia, Sulawesi, 1st half of 20th c. Ca. 800 × 73 cm (with fringes).
Cotton warp ikat dyed in red, brown and blue. Symmetrical fields, abstractly patterned, except for a field with water buffalos, above and below a central field with anthropomorphic figures in triangles. Intended to decorate a Tongkonan house for ritual purpose.
Provenance: Old Swiss private collection, acquired around 1988 in Rantepao, Sulawesi (no documents available).
