FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT
(1867–1959)
CHAIR, "David Wright Chair" model, designed ca. 1955 for the house of Frank Lloyd Wright's son in Arizona. This copy was made for the former owner Joyce Rayward in the "Tirranna" house (built 1956-58) in New Canaan (Connecticut), USA.
Teak. Cushion with red fabric cover.
62 × 74 × 80 cm.
Signs of use.
Provenance:
- Gift of Joyce Rayward, former owner of the Tirranna House, before 1994 (with a copy of a letter from Rayward to the mother of the present owner).
- By inheritance in the present Swiss-German private collection.
Other "David" chairs by Wright with yellow fabric upholstery from the Tirranna House were bequeathed by Joyce Rayward in 1963 and 1964, respectively, to well-known public collections such as the Chicago Institute of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York (copies of donation letters available). An armchair from Frank Lloyd Wright's son's house is pictured in the magazine "House Beautiful" (November 1955), which gives us a terminus ante quem for dating the work's design.
