J. Darmanin & Sons were active in Malta, from 1800 to ca. 1880. They took part in several international exhibitions, and were known for their excellent marble work. Some of their work can be found in the Royal Collection, for example a central table which was displayed at the 1851 Exhibition and bears the coats-of-arms of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (Inventory No. RCIN 2631). A very similar representation of the horse can be found on the tops of a pair of tables made by Darmanin & Sons, sold at Christie's in New York in 2007, and originally owned by Charles William, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry (1778-1854), Wynyard Park. (Auction 1884, Lot No. 300).
