LARGE FOLDING OR TRAVELING TOOL PROBABLY FOR A GARDENER

German or Dutch, ca. 1600.
Oval, slightly curved walnut handle, inlaid with engraved ivory and mother-of-pearl in the shape of two angels holding grotesque shields, surrounded by tendrils, in part with stylized blossoms. Scale band. The domed handle cap engraved with a rosette, the knob missing. The handle collar engraved with leaf decoration, the outermost ring rotating to lock the folding tools: three different blades and a saw. Various smith's marks and an old inventory number 180.
L 22.5 cm.

Signs of use, iron parts corroded.

The indication that this is a gardener's tool is taken from, for example, the Dorotheum auction catalog: Dorotheum auction catalog, Besteck-Sammlung Franz Emmerich Graf Lamberg. Vienna, 1912. p. 12, fig. 125. This multifunctional tool has three identical blades and similar design features on the handle. Another "Couteau de jardinier" (gardener's knife) from the 16th century. is in the Musée de la Renaissance Château d'Ecouen and has similar blade shapes (inv. no. EC99).
