The Baltic region is home to the largest known deposit of amber, called Baltic amber or succinite. It was produced sometime during the Eocene epoch, but exactly when is a matter of debate. It has been estimated that the ancient forests of this region created more than 100 000 tons of amber. Numerous extinct genera of insects and small animals as well as species of plants and animals have been discovered and scientifically described from the inclusions in Baltic amber.
Presented here is an extremely large piece of genuine gem-quality Baltic amber. With its iridescent orange glow and elegant, organic shape, it is a real eye catcher, whether combined with other minerals and specimens or with contemporary art.
