LARGE DOOR KNOCKER WITH ZEUS FIGHTING THE TITANS

Italy, Veneto, 16th/17th century. In the style of Alessandro Vittoria.
Brown patinated bronze. Drop-shaped, open-worked, figural door knocker. Depiction of Zeus riding an eagle on a scroll and leaf tendril handle and three Titans plunging downwards in suffering poses. Iron mounting rod.
H 35 cm, L 32 cm.

The right hand of Zeus is broken off. Various abrasions and wear. Scratches and minor dents. Corroded iron rod.

Provenance:
- Auction Nagel Stuttgart, February 23, 2011, lot 644.
- Private collection Germany, acquired at the above auction.

A watercolor study by the painter Thomas Cromek (1809-1873) probably shows the identical bronze door knocker. The drawing from the Batchelor Collection entitled “A study of a Venetian bronze door-knocker depicting Zeus” is in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (inv. no. PD.78-2015). It can be assumed that the English painter saw this door knocker from 1830 onwards during his 20-year stay in Italy.
