Richard Mortensen was a Danish painter of the 20th century whose abstract works of vibrant colours and geometric forms gained international recognition. Influenced by Surrealism and Constructivism, he lived occasionally in Paris, taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and was one of the most important Danish artists of his time.

Mortensen's work ‘Ajaccio’ (lot 3411) is characterised by a unique synthesis of geometric forms, bright colours and a deep sensitivity and sensuousness. Vibrant shades of orange, red and blue come together. Every form seems to have its fixed place, the boundaries are clearly drawn and yet there is a subtle tension in the air. What is depicted seems like a momentary snapshot of a state that could change again immediately. The clear lines create an appealing visual dynamic, the canvas becomes a stage on which the visual elements come to life. Threatening or harmless, graceful or repulsive, whatever the circumstance we are engaged in preserving the sensuous moment.
