PETER BIRMANN

(1758 Basel 1844)
In the vicinity of Rome with a church, a family resting in the foreground, the father with a lute. Circa 1785.
Pen and brush and brown ink, black pencil. On thin laid paper, old mount on firm laid paper.
Signed in pen and brown ink at lower edge: P. Birmann fecit.
84 x 63.5 cm. Framed.

We thank Dr Claudia Nordhoff for pointing out a drawing in the Museo Casa di Goethe, Rome (inventory catalog Z 4, the dimensions of the work are 83.2 x 65.5 cm). This has been inscribed and signed by the artist: "Vue de St. Jean Lateran a Rome / P. Birmann ad. nat. fecit ("View of San Giovanni in Laterano"). The present drawing of about the same size is probably a replica of this work. - The Lateran Palace and the facade of S. Giovanni are visible in the background. The view is taken approximately from the Baths of Caracalla, from where a piece of the Aurelian city wall can also be seen.

Provenance:
- Sale Galerie Kornfeld Bern, 17 June 1998, Lot 12.
- Private collection, Switzerland.
