FOSSIL TORTOISE SHELL

Stylemys nebrascensis
Oligocene, 33.9–23 million years
White River Badlands, South Dakota, USA
55 × 35 × 23 cm

Stylemys, the ‘pillar turtle’, is the first fossil genus of a dry land tortoise discovered in the United States. They lived in temperate to subtropical areas of North America, Europe, and Asia. In 1852, Joseph Leidy described Stylemys nebrascensis from several specimens collected by Dr John Evans of the U.S. Geological Corps during an expedition in 1849.

The specimen presented here is in very good condition and has beautiful colour and patina. Discovered in the White River Formation in the Badlands of South Dakota, this fossil tortoise shell is a wonderful addition to any collection.
