TOMAHAWK

Oklahoma, USA
1880
Metal, ash wood
62 × 51 × 8.7 cm, (not including stand)

The so-called pipe tomahawk, a throwing axe that could also be used for pipe smoking, likely originated in Oklahoma. Most of these tomahawks are attributed to the indigenous Sioux or Comanche tribes. They were considered the ‘last true weapon’, and were used during the Native American Wars in the 1860s to 1870s. On the other hand, they were also one of the most popular objects of exchange in trade between Native Americans and European traders.

The tomahawk pipe, which combined the forms of both a hatchet–like weapon and a peacemaking pipe, had deep, symbolic meaning. It was emblematic of the harmony and balance between war and peace, united in a single object.

The tomahawk presented here dates from the 1880s and can be attributed to the indigenous peoples of the Plains. Made of ash wood, the shaft is slightly tapered and has been decorated with file branding. With the addition of the pipe head, decorated with simple ornaments, the tomahawk became a weapon of war. Due to the rather plain ornamentation, this object was most likely made for active use.
