WOOLLY MAMMOTH TUSK

Mammuthus primigenius
Alaska, USA
Upper Pleistocene, 18 000–20 000 years
Actual length of tusk 288 cm, width 14.5 cm (without base)

Provenance: Swiss private collection

The Woolly mammoth is a member of the elephant family. The most striking feature of the woolly giant is its two tusks in the upper jaw. In contrast to elephant species still living today, the tusks in the adult mammoth are curved upward in a spiral pattern.

The tips point inwards and are thus directed towards each other. Besides presenting dominance in mating or ritual combat or as a warning signal for food competitors, the tusks were often used in search of food.

The specimen presented here is not only impeccably preserved but also boasts an extraordinary size. Its exquisite colouring, ranging from deep beige to smoky grey, along with beautiful bluish areas and an intricate patina make it a truly outstanding remnant of a bygone giant. It bears small signs of surface restoration, indicative of efforts aimed at its preservation and enhancement.
