MARC CHAGALL
(Vitebsk 1887–1985 Saint-Paul-de-Vence)
Grand bouquet à Vence. 1973.
Oil and pastel on masonite.
Signed lower right: Marc / Chagall.
35 × 27 cm.
The authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the Comité Marc Chagall, Paris, 3.12.2002.
Provenance:
- Ida Chagall collection.
- Private collection Milan.
- Galleria A.M., Verona.
- Private collection Bergamo, Italy.
In the present painting, the central flower bouquet is surrounded by the well-known pair of lovers on the right side and the green head of a donkey in the top left corner. As a landscape, warm brown tones in the background outline Chagall's adopted home Saint-Paul-de-Vence with the distinctive tower of the Église Saint-Paul, while the horizontal band in front of it serve to echo the white of the flowers.
Particulary impressive is the generous, impasto use of color that Chagall chose for the execution of the flowers, which gives the white, red and violet bouquet an additional presence.
