We would like to thank the Comité Marc Chagall for confirming the authenticity of the work, Paris, 14.12.2022.

Provenance:
Swiss private collection, by descent to the present owners.

As of 1966, Marc Chagall and his second wife, Vava, had settled in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, a charming, small village nestled just inland of the Côte d'Azur, where he is also buried. From this late phase of his artistic career, we are pleased to offer two flower paintings (lot 3222 and lot 3267).

Both works originate from the year 1973. Chagall's creativity and his relentless drive to create remained undiminished. In addition to his intensive work on the large Four Seasons mosaic for the First National Bank in Chicago, the designs for the stained glass window of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Reims, and the graphic works on biblical and mythological subjects – the sketchbook for the Queen of Sheba and the 82 lithographs for Homer's Odyssey – Chagall was increasingly drawn to the motif of flowers in that year. He had been revisiting this theme since the late 1920s, although his bouquets never simply stood alone in the sense of classical still-lifes, but instead were combined with landscapes, animal shapes, and figures.
