This characteristic painting by Jan van Goyen is a striking demonstration of the artist's ability to create wonderfully atmospheric effects. On the left in the middle ground, passengers on a ferry can be made out, while in the foreground several cows graze peacefully. The small village among the trees appears as a dense cluster of interlocking roofs, culminating in the church spire. Although the village depicted bears topographical similarities to Overschie in the province of South Holland, it has not been possible to locate it precisely. Van Goyen painted this landscape several times during his career, including a version from the same year in the National Gallery in London (inv. no. NG151, oil on wood, signed and dated 1645, 66 × 96.5 cm; see MacLaren 1991, cat. no. 151).

In Jan van Goyen's oeuvre, the 1640s are characterised by panorama-like landscapes in a large wide format, in which he lowers the line of the horizon to the lower third and structures the picture with a lively scene in the foreground and a topographical view in the background, as in the painting offered here.
