Joseph Coteau was one of the most famous enamelists of his time and worked with the most renowned Parisian watchmakers of the time. In his native Geneva, he was appointed Master Painter and Enamelist of the Saint Luc Academy in 1766. A few years later, he moved to Paris. From 1772 until the end of his life, he was a resident of the Rue Poupée. Coteau's name is associated with an elaborate technique of relief enameling that he developed with Parpette, which was intended for decorating certain porcelain items in Sèvres and which he later used to decorate the dials of the most valuable pendulum clocks. His creations are represented in the most famous museum collections.
