A PAIR OF CANDELABRAS
Louis XV style, Paris, dated 1878. Signed Henry Dasson (Henry Dasson, 1825-1896), in the style of Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier.
Chiseled and gilt bronze. Baluster shaft decorated with leaves. Removable upper section with three curved light branches and bud-shaped nozzles. Finely decorated with blossoms, leaves and rocailles.
H 49 (28) cm, Ø 26 cm.
Gilding in part rubbed and somewhat oxidized.
Henry Dasson was one of the most gifted makers of gilt bronzes for furniture in the 19th century. Unlike other cabinetmakers of the time, Dasson began his career as a bronze chaser, as evidenced by the quality bronze work on later furniture. For the design of the Rococo-style candelabras on offer, Dasson was inspired by Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750), Louis XV's court draftsman (Cf. Ottomeyer/Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Vol. I, Munich, 1986; pp. 105/106 for designs by Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier).
