Ole Fischer was born in 1943 in Remscheid. While working with a commercial artist as a youth he discovered a liking for lithography and, after some visits to the International Summer Academy in Salzburg, he went to study graphic art in Cologne. In 1965 having attended a half-yearly seminar at the Tamarind Institute, he moved to the USA where he was to stay until 1971. Through his activity at renowned lithography workshops, he got to know the New York art scene and its protagonists. In 1971 he returned to Leverkusen, worked independently as a lithographer, and in 1977 took on a teaching post at the college of higher education in Cologne. In 1984, Ole Fischer decided to dedicate himself entirely to painting, which he did successfully until his early death in 2005.
His works, as in the present work from 1992, are characterised by a dense composition, which gives rise to an impressive, slightly disconcerting spatial structure. “The ambivalence of illusionistic and real forms, of two-dimensional elements and areas of an almost three-dimensional quality, which are brought to bear in his work, build up that particular arc of suspense from the picture to the architectonic space.” (quote from: Gabriele Uelsberg, in: Exh. Cat. Ole Fischer-Expressionen, Cologne 2016, p. 20)
