The planning for Christo & Jeanne-Claude’s project in Central Park in New York began in 1979 and the project was realised in 2005. 7503 gates with saffron-coloured cloths were spread over 37 km of the park. Each gate was 4.87 m high, the width varying according to the different widths of the paths, between 1.68 and 5.48 m. The individual gates were spaced 3.65 m from one another; the cloths hanging up to approximately 2.13 m above the ground.
For the 16 days of the installation, Central Park was used by the New Yorkers as on any other day. "For those who walked through The Gates, the saffron colored fabric was a golden ceiling creating warm shadows. When seen from the buildings surrounding Central Park, The Gates seemed like a golden river appearing and disappearing through the bare branches of the trees and highlighting the shape of the meandering footpaths."
