(Guimarães 1939–lives and works in Portugal)
Untitled.
Acrylic and mixed media on paper.
Signed top right: José de Guimarães.
50 x 75 cm.

Provenance: Private collection Germany.

José de Guimarães is considered the most famous contemporary artist in Portugal. Having originally studied engineering, his early artistic career was influenced initially by Fauvism and German Expressionism, but as the result of his seven year spell in the military in Angola, he developed his own powerful pictorial language, with a formal structure which is reminiscent of an archaic-tribal symbolism. In the case of the present works, we see clearly this interest in central themes determined by form.

Both works also show however the specifics of the artist’s technique: in the colour impasto an intuitive style is apparent, similar to that of meditative sand drawings. Thereby form and colour are combined in José de Guimarae’s work to create an inherently harmonious expression. His paintings, prints and collage objects are well established in numerous museum and private collections, and in particular the Würth collection. With their consciously selected elements from the building aesthetic, his memorable compositions are also popular for public spaces, for example a tile work at the Alte Oper station, which the Portuguese ambassador João Diogo gave to the Berlin underground on the occasion of its centenary.
The work of José de Guimarães has impressed the important art critic Pierre Restany, who sees it as a reflection of the “the sustained cultural presence of Portugal” (Restany, Pierre: José de Guimarães, José de Guimarães – Bilder, Objekte und Figuren, Künzelsau, 2001, p. 19.)
