BARBIERI, GIOVANNI FRANCESCO, IL GUERNICO

(Cento 1591-1666 Bologna)
Death of St. Joseph.
Black and red chalk, squared in red chalk. Old mount.
37.6 x 41.3 cm.
37,6 x 41,3 cm.

Provenance: Collection Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830), London, Lugt 2445 Collection W.S.Brough, England, (19th/20th century), Lugt 2652 Private collection Switzerland Nicholas Turner dates this drawing "about 1650". Completely executed drawings by Guernico are very rare in his œuvre. They were mostly done in three or four chalks. Of the few known examples, the "Holy Family" at the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, is probably the most important (inv.no I,99; D.M.Stone, Guernico, Master Draftsman: Works from North American Collections, Harvard, 1991, p.56, no.23). Also at the the Piermont Morgan Library is a second example, "Ecce Homo". A drawing of St. Luke, attributed to Guernico, executed in black and red chalk, is part of the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle (inv. no.2728; D. Mahon and N.Turner, The Drawings of Guernico in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen at Windsor Castle, Cambridge, 1989, no.371). The figures of Christ and the Virgin Mary recall the protagonists of Guernico's 1647 painting "The Tears of St. Peter" at the Louvre (L.Salerno, I dipinti del Guernico, Rome, 1988, p.310, no.10). The squaring of the drawing, which does not relate to any presently known work of the painter, is unusual. We thank Nicholas Turner for confirming the attribution, and for his help in cataloguing the drawing.
